Yiannis Sgouros

Ioannis Sgouros has been the Head of the Region of Attica since 1 January 2011.Mr. Sgouros served as Prefect of Athens from 1st of January 2003 until the end of 2010.He has been a full Member of the EU Committee of the Regions (CoR) since October 2003. He is also one of the Vice-Presidents of the CoR Bureau and actively participates in the CoR Bureau Meetings and Plenary Sessions where opinions are issued and resolutions are adopted on topics of current political import which may have significant impact on local and regional authorities. Mr. Sgouros belongs to the Party of European Socialists (PES) Group in the Committee of the Regions. He is also a member of the following CoR Commissions:Commission for Education, Youth, Culture and Research (EDUC)Commission for Environment, Climate Change and Energy (ENVE)Mr. Sgouros has served as General Secretary of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) since December 2000. In 2009, he was elected Honorary Life IWF General Secretary.He also served as General Secretary of Sports from 23.10.1996 to 16.1.2001.Mr. Sgouros has been a Member of the Hellenic Olympic Committee since 1996.Between 1996-1997, he was a Member of the "Athens 2004" Bid Committee for the Olympic Games.From 1998 to 11.1.2001, he was a Member of the ‘‘Athens 2004'' Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games.He is an executive officer of Alpha Bank.He is married to Fani and has three children.Sporting CareerΑ. As an Athlete:

- Between 1964-1970, he was a basketball player in ESPEROS VIZANTIOU, a Thessaloniki-based basketball team playing in the Greek Basketball Second Division. - Between 1971-1980, he was a basketball player in ‘Milon' Athletic Club of Nea Smyrni (AONS O MILON), a basketball team playing in the Greek Basketball Α2 League (Formerly Second Division).Β. As a Coach: - Between 1972-1980, he was the coach of the Youth & Junior basketball teams. Between 1981-1982, he was the coach of ‘AONS O MILON' men's basketball team. - Between 1979-1980, he was also the coach of the basketball team of the ‘Leontion Lyceum' graduates. - In 1978, he founded the ‘AONS O MILON' Basketball Academy, which is still one of the most productive Basketball Academies in Greece.C. As a Sports Executive Officer: In Greece:- From 1983 to October 1996, he was the Chairman of the Historic Athletic Club ‘AONS O MILON' (founded in 1928). - Between 1984-1996 and from 2000 to August 2005, he was the Chairman of the Hellenic Weightlifting Federation. He became General Secretary of Sports in 1996. - Between 1999-2000, he was the Chairman of the National Committee of Greece for ‘Sports For All', and from 1997 until now he is the Vice Chairman of the Foundation for Olympic Education.Internationally:- 1987: MEMBER of the European Weightlifting Federation's Executive Board. - 1988: MEMBER of the International Weightlifting Federation's Executive Board. - 1988: CHAIRMAN of the Judicial - Disciplinary Committee of the International Weightlifting Federation. - 1991: Second VICE CHAIRMAN of the European Weightlifting Federation's Executive Board. - 1992: VICE CHAIRMAN of the International Weightlifting Federation's Executive Board. - 1995: First VICE CHAIRMAN of the European Weightlifting Federation's Executive Board. From 1996 to December 2000, he was First Vice Chairman of the International Weightlifting Federation's Executive Board. In December 2000, he was elected General Secretary of the International Weightlifting Federation.In the 1997 Congress of the International Weightlifting Federation, he was elected, unanimously, Chairman of the Finance Committee, which is also responsible for Marketing matters.D. Participation in Olympic Games:He participated in the 1988 (Seoul), 1992 (Barcelona) and 1996 (Atlanta) Olympic Games as a MEMBER of the International Weightlifting Federation and CAPTAIN of the Hellenic Olympic Weightlifting Team. In the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, he participated in his capacities of General Secretary of Sports and Member of the Organising Committee of the International Weightlifting Federation.F.
