The president of the Hellenic Gymnastics Federation, Thanassis Vassiliadis, was born in 1954 in Thessaloniki and was one of the first athletes and coaches of Greece in gymnastics. He was involved with artistic gymnastics in 1969 as a student of Chris Chatzitakis and participated in the Universiade and the National Championship in 1973, as the athlete of Panthessalonikeios. As a coach, he worked with Panthessalonikeios (1977-1980) and SEGAS for many years (1976-1977 and 1981-1985 as an associate trainer, 1985-1994 as a federal trainer). Moreover during 1989-1992 he was head trainer of the women’s national gymnastics team. In addition, he was the President of the Hellenic Gymnastics Coaches and played a leading role in the movement for an independent Gymnastics Federation, thus leaving SEGAS in 1994. From 1997 to 2002, Thanassis Vassiliadis worked for the Greek Gymnastics Federation, having the organisational responsibility for the domestic and international gymnastics competitions that were held on Greek soil. He was also in charge of the men's national gymnastics team for the European Championships of 2000 and the Olympic Games of the same year. During 2002-2003 he had collaborated with the federation only during periods of major events and he successfully carried out the task of Competition Director at the European Championships in Men/Women Gymnastics in Patras (2002) and at the Gymnastics World Cup of Thessaloniki (2003). From March 2004 to February 2007 he was advisor of the Deputy Minister of Culture responsible for Sport, Giorgos Orfanos. In 2006, he had the overall coordination of the European Championships Men/Women Gymnastics of Volos, as the Organizing Director of the competitions.
Thanassis Vassiliadis is a teacher of Physical Education (graduate of the University of Thessalonica) and was also professor of Physical Education at the Aristotle University of Thessalonica from 1981 to 1987. He was elected president of the Hellenic Gymnastics Federation in June 2007.
He is a member of the Plenary Session of the Hellenic Olympic Committee since 2008 and in 2009 he was elected Second Vice President of the HOC untill 2016. Now he is the Chairman of the Torch Relay Commission
