Alexandros Nikolopoulos

Bronze medal, April 7, 1896, Alexandros Nikolopoulos Heavyweight one hand lift. Athens 1896
The participation in this competition was very low, since one-hand weightlifting was not so widespread in the world compared to classical (two-hand) weightlifting. Thus, only four athletes from three countries, Greece, Denmark and Great Britain, participated. Briton Loceston Elliott, who lived in India until he was 13 years old, was too strong for his opponents. With a power of 71 kg he won easily and by a large margin. The second place was decided in detail, the Dane Viggo Jensen and the Greek Alexandros Nikolopoulos ended their successful efforts with a draw at 57 kg. The rules at the time allowed the judges to determine the ranking based on the best technique and style of the two athletes in the event of a tie. They preferred Jensen’s style and Nikolopoulos had to settle for 3rd place.
Final Ranking: Elliott (Great Britain) 71k Jensen (Denmark) 57 Nikolopoulos (Greece) 57 Versis (Greece) 40
